Three summer landscape solutions
During the warm summer season, it is common to encounter some landscaping issues. Typical issues may include dry soil, weeds, and nature’s wildlife which can inhibit you from enjoying your landscape to the fullest. With our years of expertise, we at FSI Landscape Supply have compiled the top three summer landscape solutions.
Did you know dry soil has the tendency to repel water if there is not enough organic material? Garden beds and lawns may experience dry soil as a result of high temperatures, not enough moisture, and lack of nutrients. Soil has four main functions. It serves as a foundation, recycles water and organic material, provides a habitat for wildlife, insects, and organic matter. Lastly, our plants rely on soil for growth and nutrients. Therefore, in order to allow soil functional properties to work optimally, consider incorporating landscape supplies such as mulch and mushroom compost. Mulch is fantastic for weed prevention, retaining moisture, and protecting the soil. Mulch also decomposes over time; although this is fantastic for adding organic matter to provide nutrients, note that the mulch will need to be reapplied. Mushroom compost, lawn clippings, and organic scraps from fruits and vegetables can also help enrich the soil’s composition.
Weeds and their seedlings are like uninvited guests. Weeds will find their way across the lawn, into garden beds, will creep into most crevices, cultivate and stay. Weeds will begin to sprout in early spring and last until late autumn if not dealt with immediately. To prevent weeds from taking over any landscape, you will need a few landscaping supplies: filter fabric, mulch, concrete sand, and a chemical solution. You may choose one or combine a few of these solutions to ensure a healthy, weed-free lawn. Filter fabric will block out sunlight. However, it will still allow water to permeate. Therefore, the soil will remain healthy, and the weeds will not stand a chance. Using a thick layer of mulch can help by acting similarly to the way filter fabric works. If the landscape or hardscape consists of natural stones or concrete pavers, sand is often used as a filler. The sand will fill the gaps preventing weeds from peeking through the spaces. Pests and wildlife may welcome themselves into garden beds and may even build their home within your landscape. Although insects and wildlife are necessary for a healthy ecosystem, you may want to control the balance. Therefore, nature’s critters are still welcome and can encourage a healthy environment. However, they will not have the opportunity to eat up or burrow through vegetable gardens. Natural stone retaining walls are the perfect summer landscaping solution. Retaining walls are much safer than chicken wire or other rough materials, which can injure any potential wildlife visitor. Not to mention, a natural stone retaining wall will add texture and a beautiful design element to any landscape. Suppose you are unsure which solution works best for your unique circumstance. Ask a landscape supplier to guide you in choosing the appropriate materials.
