As a result of the pandemic, many individuals have turned to gardening as a hobby. Surprisingly, many males under the age of 35 have turned to gardening as a positive outlet, which is a new demographic, explains Mackenzie Nichols. Research suggests that the new gardening enthusiasts have considered continuing and returning to gardening regardless of the Covid-19 status. FSI Landscape Supply shares, “we have seen many individuals take the gardening hobby and become professional landscapers. You never know where inspiration will take you. With everyone at home during this difficult time, many hobbies are being rediscovered. The pandemic has not been easy to manage; however, it is great to see that millions of people have turned to a positive pastime and are enjoying the outdoors”.
Exercise, stress-relief, and creative outlet, the yard is an extension of a home providing more space to enjoy. As spring 2021 approaches, Mackenzie Nichols shares the top four landscaping trends we are expected to see in 2021. Number one being bigger and better food gardens. Home growing your food makes one less trip to the grocery store for produce. CEO of Bonnie Plants, Mike Sutterer, suggests helping others in need by taking extra produce to your neighbours or community food banks/pantry. FSI Landscape explains, “Growing vegetables, fruits and herbs are excellent especially for gardening beginners. A raised garden bed is a great way to organize your growing produce, keep wildlife away from having a feast, and is easy to maintain. Our professional tip would be to use brown armour stone, which provides a secure structure. You will need basic materials such as gravel, soil, and few others. Your landscape professional can assist you in building the perfect raised garden bed.”
Turning backyards into outdoor living space is number two on the list. Mackenzie shares,” as we’ve all grown increasingly tired of staring at our own four walls while quarantining, one of the biggest trends for 2021 is bringing the indoors outside”. The outdoor living space trend has gained popularity over the past couple of years and will continue to do so. FSI Landscape Supply agrees, “the extension of outdoor living spaces is a great way to enjoy the outdoors comfortably. Hardscaping is excellent for patios or outdoor dining areas. It allows you to create a rustic yet polished look in your yard”.
Mackenzie shares,” 2021 will be the year of tropical plants as gardeners yearn to bring a little exotic flair to their landscapes”. With travel being limited, tropical and bright coloured plants can help brighten up any space. FSI Landscape supply suggests, “tropical plants can help lift your spirits and bring life to any garden. To enhance the bold colours further, we suggest using decorative gravel or mulch”.
Lastly, the fourth trend expected for spring 2021 will increase the desire to incorporate indoor house plants. FSI Landscape Supply shares, “whether we plant them outside or bring them indoors, there is no question that plants, landscaping, and gardening bring a sense of joy.”
