Preparation required for planting a flower bed
David Beaulieu has learned from experience that the early spring months are a great time to start the physical work on your garden bed. “But you can plan in advance, so when the time is right, you can get to work,” says FSI Landscape Supply.
David Beaulieu offers a few valuable tips that can help you prepare for planting a flower bed. Taking inspiration from magazines, local nurseries, and your neighbour’s yard can help you plan. David Beaulieu also advises keeping the shape and texture of your planting bed in focus and not relying only on colours to make your garden bed look nice.
FSI Landscape Supply emphasizes, “Visualizing what you want your garden to look like will help you select the right plants, get the necessary tools, and create the landscape seamlessly. You can even start by taking a few pictures of the landscape and digitally filling it up with the plants you want to have. This will help you see exactly what a finished planting bed will look like. You can make changes and tweaks virtually until you are happy with the results, then start planting. It will save you money and time.”
Tools & materials
So, what are the landscaping supplies and equipment you need to create a flower bed? David Beaulieu’s suggested list of tools includes garden staples, shovels, shears or utility knives, and trowels. You also need to keep compost, soil, mulch, and plants of various colours and heights handy.
FSI Landscape Supply adds, “Along with the gardening supplies, make sure to have protective gear in place. Wear gloves, safety goggles, earplugs, safety boots, and respirators.”
Process of planting a flower bed
David Beaulieu suggests a step-by-step process to create the planting bed. Start with choosing the location, then decide the style and the colour scheme you want. Based on that, finalize your plants, and lay them out over the area, but wait to plant them. Once you are convinced about the layout, remove grass and weeds, lay a weed barrier, add organic amendments in the soil, and begin putting in the plants. Finish it off with a thick mulch layer.
FSI Landscape Supply concludes, “You can further enhance the look of the flower bed by adding decorative gravel along the boundary.”
David Beaulieu suggests that you can build the garden bed as per your requirement. All gardens don’t necessarily need flourishing flowers. It can be made with small ornamental trees or simple shrubs as well. “Whether you want to create a bed of annual flowers, or seasonal fruits and vegetables, this step-by-step guide will help you immensely,” reiterates FSI Landscape Supply.
