SIMA’s article states that there is a fear related to slip and falls caused by winter conditions. However, the over-application of salt creates more harmful scenarios than good ones. An over-application of road salt or other de-icing salt agents can cause product waste and money loss.
Chris Marino shares a story about a client who asked for an abundant amount of salt application. Educating a client on the ineffectiveness of over-application will benefit each party before the contract is signed. FSI Landscape Supply agrees, “education is essential; clients should be aware that the overuse of de-icing salt can potentially damage the surface area of the surrounding facility, cost more than expected, and is ineffective. The right product or proper salt agent will get the job done without being wasteful”.
FSI continues to share, “there are multiple varieties of de-icing salt, our staff is well equipped with the knowledge behind each product. From calcium chloride to bulk salt/sand mixes, so many choose from that will effectively address any weather condition. We also have products with less bounce rate; therefore, the salt agent stays where it is put, resulting in less waste and excellent de-icing capabilities. Product knowledge is key”.
Chris explains that educating your snow removal team on proper use, calculating application, and keeping updated on current methods being implemented on snow and ice removal can dramatically improve industry standards—allowing you to rise above the competitors. Chris continues to explain that they have implemented software technology that tracks which de-icing material is being used and how much is being applied per client. FSI Landscape Supply expresses, “the software tracking technology should be implemented in all salting trucks, for both large and small fleets. This is not just good for tracking the use of salt. It is beneficial when it comes to purchasing the restock supply for the next winter season. The contractors will know exactly what is needed.”
Chris also brings to our attention how to encourage clients into understanding that less is more. Suppose clients are adamant about using an abundant amount of de-icing salt or not concerned about the adverse effects over-salting could potentially cause. As a contractor, you should take responsibility for charging per application. FSI shares, “yes, this could encourage clients to understand how the overuse of salt could impact their wallets. However, more education on how the overuse of salting agents is ineffective might open discussions of the opportunity to use more beneficial products. Therefore, it is a win-win situation, and safety is the number one priority.”
Professional snow plow contractors and landscape professionals alike can always benefit from educating themselves on current products and industry standards: the result, a safe and happy community.
