Homeowners are spending more money during quarantine. As entertainment restrictions continue to be implemented, any money that is not being spent on dining or entertainment, homeowners are investing in their homes and property. FSI Landscape Supply agrees, “we have definitely seen an increase of individuals wanting to upgrade their landscape and gardens. Landscaping professionals are kept busy installing patios, outdoor living spaces, vegetable gardens, and many other landscaping elements. As we are staying safe, expenditures are reserved for necessities. Therefore, it makes sense that any extra money is being put towards the home and hiring professionals to tend to the interior and exterior”.
Reducing the size of the lawn is number two on the list. Caroline Broderick writes, “In order to accommodate an outdoor entertainment area and gardening spaces, more homeowners are shrinking the sizes of their lawns, according to Garden Media.” FSI Landscape Supply agrees, “The outdoor living trend had gained popularity a bit before the pandemic. However, lately, an increasingly large amount of homeowners are making the most out of their homes. Their main focus is on expanding their living space. As mentioned in the article, inevitably, lawn space will shrink to accommodate landscaping elements, such as an outdoor living area. It also helps to leave less day-to-day yard maintenance when you incorporate elements such as a patio, outdoor kitchen or pool”.
The third trend mentioned by Caroline is that more people are growing vegetables and other edible plants. Caroline highlighted the most researched term on Google in April 2020 was “victory garden.” This term is in reference to a vegetable garden meant to assist with food production during times of war. Although war is not the reason for implementing produce gardens, it is easy to understand why this term was highly researched. FSI Landscape Supply shares, “at FSI, we had commented on a previous article regarding many homeowners growing their produce. With an at-home produce garden, you make less frequent trips to the grocery store; you know exactly who is managing your food and how your food was produced. For those who have never grown a produce garden before, it is always best to ask a landscaping professional for direction on how to start and maintain the garden successfully”.
New homeowners now have the space. Caroline mentions that many Americans are moving further away from city life and moving into the suburbs with plenty of property to garden and landscape. FSI Landscape Supply expresses, “this trend is picking up here in Canada as well. Many individuals want the property to comfortably enjoy a larger living space, especially now that staying home has become the norm. It is common for homes in populated cities to offer minimal square footage of yard space. Purchasing a home further away from the city to gain property and freedom from a busy city lifestyle is becoming a popular choice”.
Lastly, on-trend for 2021, a focus on environmentally-friendly gardening practices. Caroline shares how individuals are becoming aware and mindful of how gardens can benefit wildlife. FSI Landscape Supply shares, “for any landscape or natural environment to flourish, we always need the support of wildlife creatures big and small. With the proper landscaping supplies, you can create a landscape and garden perfect for nature’s wildlife to enjoy as well”.
